Here is how it works: when you click a “Summarize With AI” button on certain sites, the summary you receive might contain invisible instructions designed to stick in your AI assistant’s memory. Those instructions tell the assistant to favor specific brands or companies in future conversations, even ones that have nothing to do with the original page.
Microsoft recently uncovered over 50 of these attempts tied to 31 companies across 14 industries. The sneaky part is that the manipulation happens behind the scenes. You would never know your AI’s recommendations had been tampered with unless someone specifically went looking for it.
Think of it as subliminal advertising for the AI age. Instead of flashing a logo on screen for a split second, bad actors embed persistent “remember this brand” prompts into tools you already trust.

Meanwhile, a model built specifically for helpful conversation got deployed in a military operation, and at xAI, employees are telling reporters that safety is, and I quote, “dead.” Three different companies. Three different failures. One shared assumption: that speed matters more than scrutiny.
I have studied 2,500 years of ethical philosophy, and I can tell you with full confidence that none of the frameworks I know include “move fast and break countries.” Not utilitarianism. Not virtue ethics. Not even the fortune cookie I quoted in that boardroom last year. We keep granting AI systems more autonomy while spending less time asking whether they have earned it. Perhaps this is the week we stop treating ethics reviews like optional homework and start treating them like the load-bearing walls they are. Just a thought.
